Become A Lifesaver

Being a volunteer Lifesaver is a about having fun, being physically fit, learning teamwork and aquatic lifesaving skills, competing in surf sports, and helping keep members of the public safe at the beach. Being a volunteer Lifesaver promotes a healthy lifestyle, positive social relationships, a sense of pride, a sense of responsibility and purpose.

What is required to be a Lifesaver?

In order to become a volunteer Surf Lifesaver and a Patrolling Member, you must first gain your Bronze Medallion.  

The Bronze Medallion is considered the base of Surf Life Saving patrolling awards. As a Bronze Medallion holder you will have the required skills and knowledge relating to surf awareness, rescue techniques, CPR and first aid, and radio communication

You are responsible for patrolling the beach and ensuring that the public remain safe, and may be called upon to perform rescues on the board or with a tube, as well as execute preventative actions.

Requirements to gain a Bronze Medallion (Certificate II in Public Safety - Aquatic Rescue)

  • Minimum age of 15 years

  • 400 metre timed pool swim in less than 9 minutes

  • by the end of the course you must be able to complete a 200m run-swim-run 

During the Bronze Medallion (Certificate II in Public Safety - Aquatic Rescue) you will cover topics such as:

  • Surf Awareness and Skills

  • Rescue Techniques

  • Resuscitation, CPR and First Aid

  •  Defibrillation and Basic Oxygen

  • Carries and supports

  • The Human Body

  • Safety and Well-being

  • Radio Operations and Communications

  • Patrols

What are your obligations? 

On completion of your Bronze Medallion you will be allocated to a patrol team and rostered to patrol Kings Beach under a senior Patrol Captain. It costs approximately $1000 to train a person in a Bronze Medallion, and we expect  any new Bronze Medallion member to perform surf rescue patrols for a minimum of one season after gaining their award. It is also a pre-requisite for all members competing at senior carnivals to complete rostered patrols. If you require more information on patrols, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Members are also required to assist the Club with fundraising activities throughout the season, this includes participation in the annual Surf Rescue Appeal, selling raffle and Art Union tickets and assisting in other events.
