Being a volunteer surf lifesaver is about having fun, being physically fit, learning teamwork and aquatic lifesaving skills, and helping keep members of the public safe at the beach. Being a volunteer surf lifesaver promotes a healthy lifestyle, positive social relationships, a sense of pride and responsibility, and purpose.
To become a volunteer surf lifesaver, you must first gain your Bronze Medallion. As a Bronze Medallion holder you will have the required skills and knowledge relating to surf awareness, rescue techniques, CPR and first aid, and radio communication.
You are responsible for patrolling the beach and ensuring that the public remain safe and may be called upon to perform rescues as well as execute preventative actions.
Eligibility for a Bronze Medallion course includes a minimum age of 15 years, a 400-metre pool swim completed in less than 9 minutes, and completion of a 200m run-surf swim-run.
Before enrolling in a Bronze Medallion course, you need to become a Member which can be completed via: SLSA – Join
Please contact our Lifesaving Office on admin@caloundrasurfclub.com.au to confirm the timing of the next Bronze Medallion course or should you need any assistance with membership.
On completion of your Bronze Medallion you will be allocated to a patrol team and rostered to patrol Kings Beach. A patrol roster is issued at the start of each season and can be accessed via the Members’ Area.
It costs Mets approximately $1,000 to train a person in a Bronze Medallion, and we expect any new Member to perform volunteer surf rescue patrols for a minimum of one season after gaining their Award. All Members are also required to assist the Club with fundraising activities throughout the season.
The Club’s Chief Training Officer coordinates training courses for new and existing Members to gain a range of Awards. This also includes compulsory annual skills maintenance so that Members remain competent.
For new or prospective Members interested in joining and enrolling in the Bronze Medallion course, please contact the Lifesaving Office on admin@caloundrasurfclub.com.au.
For current Members seeking information on training courses and or skills maintenance, information is available in the Members’ Area.
At Mets we provide a range of opportunities for Members to develop to their full potential in their chosen area of interest. Whether you want to patrol the beach, compete in surf sports, or participate in a role working with your kids (nippers) – we can provide the skills and opportunities to get you there.
Members can access training and development opportunities from Club right up to national level. Members can get involved in the Club both on or off the beach with roles to suit a broad range of interests and skills. There are also plenty of social and networking opportunities as part of our Club community.
Mets was named the 2018/19 Queensland Youth Development Club of the Year for our work building the skills and involvement in surf lifesaving of our young members.
Surf lifesaving plays a pivotal role in the community in providing a safe and supportive environment in which young people can grow and develop their skills and experience. The youth of surf lifesaving are not only the key to our future but in many cases are leading the way now. With nearly half of our membership under the age of 18, they are critical to all aspects of surf lifesaving.
At Mets we offer our young members a range of opportunities from gaining accredited Awards to access to leadership programs as well as social and networking activities. Surf lifesaving offers youth unique experiences that helps them in becoming confident, becoming responsible members of our community, and can provide pathways to employment opportunities.
