At the Club's Annual General Meeting on Sunday 18 June 2017, the Club's 42nd and 43rd Life Members were elected. They were Stephen Maitland OAM and Jase 'Molly' Bean. See below a brief history of their involvement with our Club.
Stephen Maitland OAM RFD
Stephen has been a member of the Club since 1991 (26 seasons). He obtained his Bronze Medallion in 1992 and has obtained dozens of other awards since, including IRB Crew, IRB Driver, Advanced Resuscitation, Beach Management (Patrol Captain), Gold Medallion, Spinal Management and ATV.
He has been an active patrolling member for 25 years, totalling more than 2,500 hours, which is an average of more than 100 per season. He won the Most Patrol Hours award in 2007 and 2013 and was a Patrol Captain for 17 consecutive seasons.
Steve has also won numerous Club awards, including Best Carnival Competitor (twice), Best Club Man, Most efficient Patrol Captain (twice), Best Masters Competitor, Most Efficient Lifesaver, Trophy for Excellence and the President's Trophy.
Steve was a member of the Surf Sports and Junior Activities Committee in 1993/94, Chief Water Safety Officer from 1993-1995, Supporters Club Committee member in 2009/10 and Masters Team Manager from 2005 to 2015. He was also an Honorary Vice President of the Club from 1998 to 2008, led the committee of review for the SLSC and Supporters Club Strategic Review in 2002 and managed the SLSC Constitution Review in 2014/15.
He was also the Treasurer of the Surf Life Saving Foundation from 1997 to 2010 and Chairman from 2010 to 2012, which is now the main fundraising arm for SLS throughout Australia. Steve has also been a major fundraiser for the Club, either directly as a top 10 collector at Surf Rescue Appeals or through obtaining corporate sponsorship for the Club.
In 2007 Steve was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for contribution to the establishment and development of the Surf Life Saving Foundation and for services as a surf life saver.
Steve has also been a keen competitor for the Club for more than 20 years, winning numerous State Masters medals.
Steve's election as a Life Member is well deserved recognition for a dedicated and proud member of Metropolitan Caloundra SLSC. He was presented with his Life Member badge at the AGM by President Mike McDonald.
Jase 'Molly' Bean
Jase Bean has been a member of the Club since 1994 after transferring up from Mollymook SLSC (hence where the 'Molly' comes from) and has provided more than 20 years service to the Club.
Molly holds his Bronze Medallion, IRB Crew, Beach Management (Patrol Captain) award and ATV Operator. He has completed more than 800 hours of patrol over this time and has also been a Patrol Captain for a number of years.
He was Club President for 3.5 seasons, Deputy President for 1.5 season, acting Club Captain for half a season, Director of Surf Sports for 1 season, Surf Boat Officer for 10 seasons, Supporters Club Committee member for 3 seasons and U13/14 age manager for 1 season. He has also been an accredited surf boat coach for 10 seasons.
He has won numerous Club awards over the years, including Most Outstanding Carnival Competitor (3 times), Best Club Man (twice), Best &*& Fairest Competitor (twice), Most Valuable Office Bearer and Best Patrol Team.
In competition, Molly has won numerous State Championship medals as a rower, including U21 Surf Boat (Silver), Reserve Grade Surf Boat (Gold); and as a sweep, including Open Female Surf Boat (Gold, Silver and Bronze). He has also swept masters surf boat crews to Gold medals at State and Australian Championships.
Molly's election as a Life Member is also recognition for distinguished service over an extended period of time with the Club. Unfortunately, Molly was unable to be present at the AGM due to family commitments, but will be presented with his Life Member badge at a formal ceremony later this year.
