Vale Life Member Ken O'Connell

Vale Life Member Ken O’Connell

The Club has lost a stalwart and Life Member with the passing on 10th July of Ken O’Connell.

Our condolences are extended to Ken’s wife Rose and his family on their loss. Ken joined the Club in 1960 from Kirra SLSC, where he joined Surf Life Saving and was awarded his Bronze Medallion in 1959. He was an active patrolling member for some 30 years, and a trainer and assessor for over 43 years. He also devoted many years of service in the administration of the Club and the Supporters’ Club.

Among the senior Surf Club positions he held were Deputy President [1986, 1987] and Secretary [1988 – 1994]. He was also a Vice-President [2000 – 2007]. He instigated the Ken O’Connell Trophy for Best Club Man in 1986/87 - which reflects the values he held highest in Life Saving.

Ken was also active in Branch and State Surf Lifesaving. He was elected to Life Membership of the Club (2007), Sunshine Coast Branch (2014)  and Queensland (2001); and received the International Life Saving Citation of Merit (1999).

A retired senior public servant, Ken was 74 years of age when he died after a long illness.
